How Your LinkedIn Network Can Help You Achieve Your Goals

It’s the beginning of a new year and you’re probably thinking about what you want it to look like for you. You may have some challenges you want to overcome or things you want to improve upon. I know I do!

It got me thinking...what if we shared our goals with each other to see if we can collaborate in some way?

The problem is that, for me, asking for help is extremely hard. But I recently learned a lesson that is helping me get over it!

Here’s a quick story:

Five years ago I had breast cancer. All the people that loved me were clamoring to help me. I would have none of it. I didn’t want to feel like an invalid or incapable of handling things, and I wanted to just deal with everything by myself. I felt really uncomfortable when people tried to help me with things.

Of course (because it’s the way of the world these days), since then some people that I care about have been afflicted with cancer. There is nothing in the world I would like more than to help them in some way - especially because I know how physically and mentally draining it is. But most people do exactly what I did - push help away.

I learned an interesting thing:

Not allowing people to help can be hurtful to the other person. Doesn’t that sound strange? But it’s true - people don’t feel put out by helping others - it lifts their spirits! It makes them feel useful and hopeful. If you can open your heart to receiving help when you need it, it can be a win-win all the way around.

I totally understand that not everyone is in a position to help others. Sometimes they have so much on their own plate they just can’t. But throughout the ups and downs of life, there are times when we want to give back.

LinkedIn is about developing a network of people that help one another. It’s a community.

Let’s share our goals with one another. Maybe there’s someone in our LinkedIn network that can help us. And maybe there’s someone that we can help.
