Many business owners and content creators have blinders on when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO). I often hear, “My web person does that.” And that’s the end of it.

SEO Basics

Here’s the problem with that mindset: I come across websites that aren’t properly optimized every single day. There are a ton of them out there, and one of them could be yours. If you don’t have at least a rudimentary understanding of SEO and the impact on your business growth, you could be dramatically minimizing your return on investment for all the content you create and post online.

If you’re not sure if your website or blog articles are set up according to SEO best practices, here are 2 things you can do:

  1. Get a report of your organic search website traffic. Is it increasing, decreasing, or staying steady? That will tell you everything you need to know. (Almost, because you could be driving people that aren’t your target audience to your website, which isn’t very helpful when it comes to making sales.)
  2. Watch the video below and do a quick evaluation of your web pages and blogs. Once you understand the SEO basics, it’s not difficult to decipher.

Choose relevant keywords and put them in the following places on your website or blog articles:

  1. Page Title
  2. URL
  3. H1 Headers
  4. Page Content
  5. Meta Descriptions
  6. Image Alt Text (I forgot to mention this in the video, but it’s important too.)

The algorithms for getting found online are constantly changing. Things like page load time, mobile friendliness, website navigation structure, social media engagement and inbound links also impact your searchability.

It’s important to remember that optimizing your site is part of building a strong foundation, but it’s just the first step. You need to be continually developing it and adding pages to keep your site fresh. The best way to increase search traffic to your site is to blog.
